Finding Our Rhythm Again After the Break

Coming back to school after a long break is never easy. The holidays are over, the routines feel a little off, and everyone is trying to remember how to be “school people” again. Students feel it. Teachers feel it. Even the building feels a little quieter and slower at first.
Right now, I am giving myself permission to ease back in. This time of year is less about jumping into something new and more about resetting our classrooms, our expectations, and our mindset. That reset matters more than we sometimes realize.
It Is Hard for Everyone and That Is Okay
Let’s be honest. Coming back after a break can be tough. Students are tired, distracted, and sometimes emotional. Teachers are doing their best to get back into the groove while balancing everything else that life brings outside of school. But this is where the heart of teaching shows up again. We keep showing up. We keep teaching. We keep doing the best we can with the students in front of us. Even when the days feel messy, the work still matters.
Teaching the Curriculum and Making It Our Own
Most of us are working with a set curriculum, pacing guides, and expectations that are already in place. While that can feel limiting at times, I truly believe there is always room for teacher voice.
We take what we are given, and we add our own spin. We adjust based on our students. We slow down when we need to. We bring in discussion, routines, and strategies that make the lessons feel more meaningful and more human. That flexibility is where real learning happens.
Resetting My Space Helps Reset My Mind
One thing that always helps me during this season is resetting my workspace (at home, too). A clean desk, a setup that feels comfortable, and tools that help me stay organized make a bigger difference than I expect. I recently started using a new planner, and I absolutely love it. It helps me see my week clearly, brain dump when I need to, and stay grounded when everything feels full. Little things like that remind me that taking care of ourselves as teachers is not extra. It is necessary.
I have also been sharing some of my favorite desk essentials and organization tools that make long days feel a little easier. If you are interested, you can find those linked here. These are things I genuinely use and love.
Moving Forward Together
If you are feeling a little off right now, please know you are not alone. Getting back into the rhythm takes time. It is okay to move slowly, to reset, and to focus on what really matters.
Keep teaching your students. Keep showing up with what you have. Keep putting your own heart into the lessons, even on the hard days. We will find our groove again.
Always Cheering You On,
Nicky B💗
